Wheelers Hill Child Care Centre - Kinder 4

4 - 6 years

Our 4-year-old kindergarten room can have 33 children per day, and follows a one educator to 11 children ratio. The Kinder 4 program is led by 1 qualified early childhood teacher and is assisted by a qualified early childhood educator. Our 4-year-old Kindergarten curriculum includes a comprehensive school readiness program.

Our Kindergarten Program

Our 4-year-old kindergarten program runs all day from Monday to Friday. Children must attend a 4-year-old funded kindergarten for at least 15 hours per week to qualify as a funded child, so children would need to be enrolled for at least 2 full days. The child needs to be turning four by April 30th of their 4-year-old kindergarten year. Families are welcome to decide which day/s they would like their child to attend kinder (pending availability).

Our kindergarten program prepares each child for the move to school, in a manner which is non-threatening and educational. We believe that learning and playing are one. Play is a process of development (intellectually, socially, emotionally and physically) in everything a child does. This is a process whereby a child’s curiosity is fulfilled by use of fantasy, imagination, independence and sensory exploration.

Our play-based curriculum is interactive and exploratory involving interaction with a rich variety of sensory materials such as mud, sand & paint, and equipment such as puzzles, lego & music. We also incorporate as many ‘real life’, meaningful play experiences as possible, e.g. threading, home corner. As educators, our first priority is to instill a love & appreciation for meaningful learning, thus helping to ensure children reach their full potential in later years. It is through this child-oriented play-based curriculum that children gain a range of social, emotional, cognitive, lingual and physical skills. By providing small group activities such as home corner and block corner, we believe this gives children the opportunity to work on social and problem-solving skills, e.g. working out an issue between two or more children, turn taking, sharing

Our kindergarten program focuses on growing self-confidence, problem-solving skills, self-esteem, skill development and independence. The Kinder 4 room teacher utilises the children’s current interests and identified strength and need areas to form the basis of the Kinder 4 program. The children are given opportunities to express which experiences and activities they would enjoy exploring throughout the program. Each child is observed and planned for, and their needs addressed, to prepare children for school. Our early childhood teacher will be more than happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have regarding your child. Family/Educator interviews take place twice a year, to discuss development in the year prior to school.

Our big outdoor space provides children with multiple opportunities to explore nature, sustainability and develop physical skills. Children have access to areas where they can run and explore as well as engage in quiet, solitary play. Educators provide many small and whole group experiences, both indoors and out, to encourage cooperation and build on social skills such as turn taking and sharing.

Even though the children are now in kindergarten, they are still exposed to all of the benefits of being in the childcare centre environment such as catered meals and the opportunity to mix with children of all ages.

Throughout the year, we provide numerous learning experiences that will assist children in the transition to primary school, such as:

  • Responsible Pet Ownership incursion
  • Lunch Box Days in term four where children bring lunch boxes to kinder & are familiarised on how to open wrappers, peel fruit, punch through straws etc.
  • Regular cooking experiences
  • Show and Tell
  • The Adventures of Super Teddy – Take Home Teddy Program
  • Events and celebrations on our yearly calendar of events
  • Gardening and growing fruits, vegetables and herbs
  • Community projects
  • An end-of-year graduation ceremony
